Pumps, cast iron pipework, valves, control panels

Onsite Duration

2 days

Location

Requirement

We were called to a surface water flood caused by the failure of a pumping station at a car park in Heathrow. On inspection our engineers discovered a catalogue of issues that needed addressing.

The pumps, pipework and control panel would need to be replaced. The backboard of the kiosk which housed the control panel was rotten and would need to be replaced.

Additionally, the system discharges into the adjacent Grand Union Canal and would surcharge when levels were high, because no gate valves or non-return valves were installed. This made flooding more likely and increased wear on the pumps.

Method

  • All work was conducted in two days.
  • On day one all of the old pipework and controls were removed and a temporary pump installed to control any overnight flows. The kiosk was repaired and fitted with a new backboard.
  • On day two we installed both pipework legs, wiring and pumps. The system was fully tested and recommissioned by the end of the day.
  • Our fully trained engineers used confined space and lifting equipment as the pumps and valves were particularly heavy.
  • Additional bracing was installed to prevent movement and provide long term stability to the system.

Results

  • Following many years of problems, the pumping station now works reliably in automatic mode.
  • Installing non-return valves prevents canal water from surcharging the chamber, lowering the risk of flooding and reducing wear on the pumps through unnecessary operation.
  • The new control panel will sound a local alarm and can be upgraded to provide the client with remote monitoring and alerts.

FOCUS ON

HEALTH AND SAFETY ALWAYS OUR PRIORITY

Our engineers were able to safely enter a deep chamber and use lifting equipment to handle heavy items within its tight confines.

We have worked diligently to be awarded the most important industry-recognised health and safety accreditations. Our engineers are fully trained in all aspects of working with pumped and drainage systems, as well as being trained in the use of gas detection equipment and confined space entry procedures.
