REQUIREMENT

We were appointed to provide one foul water pumping station and three storm water pumping stations for a large commercial development in London. Each would need to conform to the site requirements whilst meeting building regulations. The foul water station would discharge to the mains sewer. The storm water pumping stations would discharge to a mains sewer or a balance pond if necessary.

METHOD

We supplied 3m diameter GRP chambers. Ductile iron pipework was specified for the high flow rates which would be achieved.

The foul water pumping station was supplied in a standard twin pump configuration with pumps of equal size. The storm water pumping stations were each supplied with one pump capable of pumping a 1 in 30 year storm event to the main sewer. If a greater flow rate is required a second, larger pump will discharge the excess into a balance pond to prevent surcharging the main sewer system.

RESULT

• We created a bespoke scheme of pumping stations to meet the special requirements of the project
• Each of the storm water pumping stations have two control panels and switches to provide back up in-case of a fault.
• The scheme allowed a substantial development to take place where gravity drainage was only available for one corner of the site and prevented costly upgrades to the main sewer network.

FOCUS ON:

BALANCE PONDS CAN PROVIDE A BUFFER DURING STORM EVENTS

As part of the urban drainage system, a balance pond helps to prevent flooding by storing water from storm events. It releases the water at a controlled rate during the event and afterwards.

Storm water which might otherwise surcharge a main sewer if pumped directly into it, can instead be pumped to a balance pond to prevent flooding.

At Edincare we can advise you on whether pumping to a balance pond may be required and how, and under what circumstances, that can be achieved.
