REQUIREMENT

Four packaged pumping stations were required to remove foul water separately from four new-build domestic properties with basements.

The 3-acre site meant that horizontal pumping distances would be up to 100m and due to the site’s topography chambers up to 5m deep would be required.

METHOD

The Edincare design team specified the pumping stations based on site drawings. The chambers were situated externally for easy access, however due to basement construction the chambers needed to be very deep. GRP chambers were manufactured to withstand the high hydrostatic pressures of the deep chambers and were installed by the groundwork contractors.

Edincare engineers fully commissioned the pumping stations, installing the floats, pumps and wiring back to the control panel.

RESULT

•  Edincare’s design team designed and situated the pumping stations to suit the site.
•  There was no need to compromise the basement slab or tanking by installing a pumping station.
•  GRP tanks are exceptionally strong and proved ideal for this site. Due to the high water table a concrete ring pumping station would not be water tight resulting in an inflow of groundwater.

DESIGN CRITICAL FOR DEEP TANKS

Careful consideration must be taken when designing deep chambers to ensure that they can withstand the high hydrostatic pressure that can be present.

Concrete rings are not always suitable especially in areas where the water table is high which can result in an inflow of groundwater.

Glass reinforced plastic (GRP) tanks are exceptionally strong and can be fabricated to any capacity and shape. A correctly designed GRP chamber will not bow due to hydrostatic pressure.

Edincare’s design team can fully specify a deep chamber to account for site conditions, capacity and application.
