REQUIREMENTA school destroyed by fire required a temporary pumping station to discharge the waste from a large temporary classroom. Building control required a 24-hour storage capacity in case of break down or power failure, when using pumps as the sole way of discharge foul waste. High ground water levels limited the depth of possible excavation. METHOD• A longitudinal chamber was specified due to the ground conditions. RESULT• A small diameter lateral tank reduces the depth of the excavation to approximately 2.5m rather than 6m using a horizontal chamber.
