INTRODUCTION

Our client, a third-party service provider, asked us to attend an emergency call out to a retail park in central East London. The station receives foul waste from a fast-food outlet. The pumps had tripped.

On arrival our pump engineers found the 4 m deep concrete-ring sump at high level. One of combi-tankers was called in to empty the chamber to enable inspection. 4,000 gallons of waste was removed for off-site disposal and a further 4,000 gallons was overpumped to a nearby chamber so that the engineers could examine the pumping station.

It was immediately obvious that the station required a full refurbishment. The guide rails had snapped and the pump pedestals had come away from the base. The pumps were inoperable and resistance test showed that they were critical. The control panel, in an adjacent kiosk, was approximately 20 years old and would also need to be replaced.

METHOD

The new pumping station was specified, approved and scheduled promptly. In less than 2 weeks our pump engineers returned to undertake the refurbishment.

They were supported by an Edincare Drains combi-tanker which remained on site to bypass the chamber for the duration of the works. The tanker emptied the chamber to allow work to begin.

Man-riding equipment was set up. Gas levels were monitored to ensure they were safe and the chamber was given time to vent. Our engineers conducted a confined entry to manually remove deposits from the chamber walls, before jetting and tankering.

With the chamber ready, fitted the new fibre grid, pedestals, guide rails, brackets, risers and manifold, and made the connection to the MDPE discharge pipework.

On the second day, they installed the pumps, floats and new control panel before conducting multiple wet tests. The system was left in Auto and fully operation.

RESOLUTION

The site now has a good-as-new pumping station which will operate reliably for many years provided it is regularly serviced.

The pumps we specified and installed are heavy-duty grinder pumps which excel in adverse conditions.

The benefit of in-house tanker support from Edincare Drains was again showcased – enabling greater co-ordination and simpler scheduling.
