REQUIREMENTA large foul water pumping station at the base of a two storey basement would require drainage by a vehicular tanker during a long term mains power supply failure situation. To facilitate this a fixed suction rising main would need to be installed to connect the pre-cast concrete sump to a ground level loading bay. METHODA member of our special projects team surveyed the site and assessed the best route to take using the existing voids within the building taking into account the vertical distance, length of the pipework and likely forces to be exerted on the rising main; ductile iron pipework was selected as the best material to use for this project. A comprehensive quotation was provided which itemised the materials required and the programme of works. The installation took five days and involved working at high level and within confined spaces, which presented challenges due to the weight of the ductile iron pipework. RESULTThe pipework will allow regular maintenance to be carried out in a more hygienic and timely manner. The suction main also completely removes the hazard of running temporary pipework down stairwells. Edincare’s comprehensive engineering stores and highly trained staff enabled installation without the need to hire extra safety equipment or tools, or subcontract any of the works.
